Atlanta, GA – July 9, 2022 – The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) turns 32 on July 26, the day in 1990 when it was signed into law by then President George Bush. This very important anniversary is significant for the disability community, as well as one Atlanta-based nonprofit, SHOWAbility, that wants to help people remember and celebrate, via a special concert event featuring its INCLUSIVE CHORUS.
According to Myrna Clayton, the founder and executive director of SHOWAbility, everybody deserves a stage and the north star for the organization is to be to the arts and entertainment industry what the Paralympics and Special Olympics are for the sports industry, showcasing talented people with disabilities. To that end, the organization is working to generate awareness and make significant impact in the areas of accessibility and opportunity within the entertainment industry, for performing artists with disabilities.
“Our ultimate vision is to assist performing artists across the disability spectrum in sharing their talents and achieving their dreams, unencumbered by policies, systems and resource constraints and mindsets that limit their potential,” shared Clayton. “We hope to do this through creating accessible opportunities in the entertainment industry, including music, film and television that empower performing artists across the disability spectrum to share their talents within the disability community and the wider world,” she said.
The SHOWAbility ADA 30 +2 Concert celebration will be held on Tuesday, July 26 at the B.E.S.T. Academy Theatre, located with B.E.S.T Academy High School, which is listed among US News and World Report’s top high schools in Georgia.
As 20 percent of the U.S. population with over 64 million people, the disability community is calling for more inclusiveness in the entertainment industry, particularly at a time when diversity and acceptance is an increasing focus in various industries, including the entertainment industry. SHOWAbility plans to be a strategic and effective leader within this burgeoning movement.
“At SHOWAbility, we are passionate about the performing arts including music, theatre, dance, poetry and film and their potential to provide entertainment, enjoyment, employment, education and empowerment to all participants,” shared Clayton. “Through our work, we prioritize the cultivation of spaces for exploration, education and training where we can help performers increase self-esteem, develop artistic talents, gain confidence in performing in front of others and ultimately become self-advocates,” she said.
In addition to the concert by its INCLUSIVE CHORUS, The SHOWAbility ADA 30 +2 Celebration event will include a fashion show by Fashion by D’Shacourt Unlimited Models, by Atlanta-based fashion designer Sharon Gary-Dill.
The concert event, which is free and open to the public, is located at B.E.S.T. Academy Theatre located 1190 Northwest Drive, NW, Atlanta, GA 30318. Attendees just need to RSVP by emailing Showability1@gmail.com. The event is being made possible by support from the LuLuMa Foundation, Community Foundation of Greater Atlanta, City of Atlanta and the Fulton County Arts Council.
