Hindi’s Libraries, an international book distribution nonprofit, is proud to announce that it has reached a new milestone in its mission of spreading the passion for reading with thousands of children worldwide. It has now donated 375,000 books to over 650 organizations throughout the US, Israel, India, Puerto Rico, Haiti, and Africa. With the back-to-school season nearing, Hindi’s Libraries aims to continue this momentum and ship 300 boxes to partner organizations across the globe, equipping them with children’s books to avoid the summer slide. All books are sent to recipients free of charge.
Founded in 2018 by David Kanarfogel and Leslie Gang, Hindi’s Libraries was created in memory of Dr. Hindi Krinsky, a beloved educator and a mother of five. She was Kanarfogel’s wife and Gang’s colleague. Dr. Krinsky passed away in August 2018 at age 32 due to complications from Crohn’s disease.
To honor her legacy, Kanarfogel and Gang decided to build three free-standing libraries and reach out to the community to donate gently used books. What began as a simple tribute grew into a worldwide initiative enriching thousands of lives through the power of books and selfless giving.
“Every book makes a difference. One book means one child now has something to read at bedtime,” says Kanarfogel.
Currently, Hindi’s Libraries works with several groups across the US to run book drives in their community and connect with recipients who can pick books directly from them. This saves money on shipping and enables the organization to better serve communities needing books.
Moreover, Hindi’s Libraries run literacy initiatives throughout the year. This includes literary contests, matching campaigns, and partnerships with renowned publishing companies such as Scholastic, Disney Publishing Worldwide, and Harper Collins. They have also worked with major companies to make an impact such as Barnes & Noble, Redbarn Pet Products, Little Free Library and Treedom.
Community support is critical to the Hindi’s Libraries’ mission. Gang says, “People all over the country can support our efforts, whether they’re mailing us one book, one box, $10 or $100. Together we’re making an impact in the lives of children across the globe.” Gang also donates all author proceeds from her children’s picture book, But Family is Forever, to fund the organization’s cause.
Millions of children worldwide currently do not have access to books, severely limiting their reading proficiency and literacy skills. Nonprofits like Hindi’s Libraries are opening opportunities for many of these children to reach their potential and inspiring a community of sharing and making a difference.
To quote Dr. Krinsky, “We’re not here for much time. We have to live to our maximum capacity, to give, understand, and make a real difference.”
