Still Alive: How The Dinner Detective Murder Mystery Dinner Show Made it out of a Pandemic Alive and Has Remained Open to the Public

America’s Largest, Award-Winning, Interactive, Comedic Murder Mystery Dinner Show Continues to Welcome Back Guests

Fort Collins, Colorado – The live entertainment industry was one of the first industries to shut down in March of 2020. The Dinner Detective, a national interactive murder mystery show complete with a four-course dinner, was no exception. On the weekend of March 14, 2020, thousands of prospective sleuths from coast to coast were notified that the cases they would be solving were being temporarily put on hold due to the looming pandemic. Gift certificates and refunds were issued in hopes of a quick return, but as the pandemic worsened, so did the outlook for live entertainment’s survival. The Dinner Detective’s team of veteran thespians, writers, and producers knew at that time they needed to exchange those prop magnifying glasses for real ones as they did some sleuthing of their own to answer one killer question: How do WE stay alive?

Unprecedented times call for innovation and creativity, and this experienced team of performers and producers rose to the occasion to save the industry they love. Creating a brand-new sister company, The Virtual Detective, to bring a new version of their show to the virtual world along with escape rooms, detective-themed scavenger hunts, and much more, was just step one. Appeasing to the masses online bought the team time for step two: rework their live show’s operation to comply with every host city’s current COVID-19 safety protocols to safely return. Currently producing murder mysteries in over 75 cities nationwide, this was a huge undertaking for The Dinner Detective team.

By mid-pandemic, the team’s efforts were paying off; murder mystery dinner shows were slowly re-opening in a city here and there where restrictions had eased. Reduced audience sizes, smaller number of guests per table, revised scripts, digitized clues and forms, mask requirements, and social distancing were all part of the new arsenal necessary to safely entertain again.

People are itching to get out of their houses and do something fun. The one thing people have been missing the most since the Pandemic started is interacting with their friends and family – in person. That is why I think live and interactive shows like ours come to the top of the list when people are thinking of fun things to do. Our shows let the audiences interact with other guests safely, have a delicious dinner, and even have the chance to be a part of the show.  The audiences who have already joined us at our shows this year have been so happy that we are still standing, as they have very much enjoyed their experience at a Dinner Detective event.– Marc Lessman, President

The need for an escape from reality and laughter has never been more necessary, and the artistic team behind The Dinner Detective found a way to stay alive to continue serving their customers amidst this global pandemic. The team’s dedication, determination and proof of concept has successfully led to the announcement of grand re-openings in cities all across America.

About The Dinner Detective

Founded by Scott and Kelly O’Brien in 2004, The Dinner Detective is the largest, award-winning, interactive comedic murder mystery dinner show in the United States and has been voted “Best Murder Mystery Dinner Show” and “Best Dinner Show” throughout the country for 17 years. Running public and private shows in cities across the country every week, these immensely popular shows are set in present day. Unlike other murder mystery dinner shows, here you will find no cheesy costumes, no recited campy dialogue, and no hokey song and dance. The performers are dressed just like everyone else in attendance, leaving guests to suspect who is part of the show and who is not. Often, guests are seated with the performers and do not realize it until they die… the performer that is! The hilarious detectives proceed to interrogate everyone and discover clues as more people die. At the end of the night, prizes are awarded to the top sleuth who solves the crime.
