Dehesa School in Eastern San Diego is setting its seventh and eighth graders up for success in a sport not commonly taught in schools— golf. This game; which dates back to 15th century Scotland, is gaining popularity among younger crowds and offers excellent scholarship opportunities for those who excel in it.
Located near the Sycuan Golf Course, Dehesa School has a unique community partnership with the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, which allows Dehesa School the opportunity to offer golf lessons to Dehesa’s middle school students. Lessons occur twice a week and are taught by golf professionals from Sycuan.
By taking advantage of this special resource, Dehesa students are provided a way to address their physical education requirements in a unique and fun way. As a part of the physical education curriculum, students are required to participate in activities that improve their physical well being as well as their emotional well being. Golf strengthens students’ core muscles, which support and protect the spine; as well as improving flexibility and aerobic fitness in a relaxing outdoor environment.
