This is a version that is quite similar to the original version noted in 1697 by John Aubrey. The version he put down was:

“Rain rain goe away,
Come again a Saturday”.

Apart from these, there are other alternatives that have also been recorded and these include: “washing day”, “Midsummer day”, “Martha’s wedding day” and “Christmas day”. James Orchard Halliwell came up with a collection in the mid-19th century and got it publishes in the version:

Rain rain go away.
Come again another day
Little Arthur wants to play.”

The lyrics for this rhyme in a book from the 19th century go like this:

“Rain rain
Go away;
Come again
April day;
Little Johnny wants to play”.
