3 Reasons to Sell FTRE and 1 Stock to Buy Instead

FTRE Cover Image

Over the past six months, Fortrea has been a great trade, beating the S&P 500 by 28.1%. Its stock price has climbed to $10.64, representing a healthy 34.8% increase. This was partly due to its solid quarterly results, and the run-up might have investors contemplating their next move.

Is now the time to buy Fortrea, or should you be careful about including it in your portfolio? See what our analysts have to say in our full research report, it’s free.

Why Do We Think Fortrea Will Underperform?

Despite the momentum, we're sitting this one out for now. Here are three reasons you should be careful with FTRE and a stock we'd rather own.

1. Revenue Spiraling Downwards

A company’s long-term performance is an indicator of its overall quality. Any business can put up a good quarter or two, but the best consistently grow over the long haul. Fortrea’s demand was weak over the last four years as its sales fell at a 2.6% annual rate. This wasn’t a great result and signals it’s a low quality business.

2. New Investments Fail to Bear Fruit as ROIC Declines

A company’s ROIC, or return on invested capital, shows how much operating profit it makes compared to the money it has raised (debt and equity).

We like to invest in businesses with high returns, but the trend in a company’s ROIC is what often surprises the market and moves the stock price. Over the last few years, Fortrea’s ROIC has unfortunately decreased significantly. Paired with its already low returns, these declines suggest its profitable growth opportunities are few and far between.

3. High Debt Levels Increase Risk

Debt is a tool that can boost company returns but presents risks if used irresponsibly. As long-term investors, we aim to avoid companies taking excessive advantage of this instrument because it could lead to insolvency.

Fortrea’s $1.19 billion of debt exceeds the $131.3 million of cash on its balance sheet. Furthermore, its 6× net-debt-to-EBITDA ratio (based on its EBITDA of $191.9 million over the last 12 months) shows the company is overleveraged.

Fortrea Net Debt Position

At this level of debt, incremental borrowing becomes increasingly expensive and credit agencies could downgrade the company’s rating if profitability falls. Fortrea could also be backed into a corner if the market turns unexpectedly – a situation we seek to avoid as investors in high-quality companies.

We hope Fortrea can improve its balance sheet and remain cautious until it increases its profitability or pays down its debt.

Final Judgment

We see the value of companies making people healthier, but in the case of Fortrea, we’re out. With its shares topping the market in recent months, the stock trades at 13.8× forward P/E (or $10.64 per share). This multiple tells us a lot of good news is priced in - we think other companies feature superior fundamentals at the moment. We’d recommend looking at one of Charlie Munger’s all-time favorite businesses.

Stocks We Like More Than Fortrea

The market’s up big this year - but there’s a catch. Just 4 stocks account for half the S&P 500’s entire gain. That kind of concentration makes investors nervous, and for good reason. While everyone piles into the same crowded names, smart investors are hunting quality where no one’s looking - and paying a fraction of the price. Check out the high-quality names we’ve flagged in our Top 9 Market-Beating Stocks. This is a curated list of our High Quality stocks that have generated a market-beating return of 244% over the last five years (as of June 30, 2025).

Stocks that have made our list include now familiar names such as Nvidia (+1,326% between June 2020 and June 2025) as well as under-the-radar businesses like the once-micro-cap company Tecnoglass (+1,754% five-year return). Find your next big winner with StockStory today.
