The American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS) Honors Past President and Welcomes New Leadership

Chicago, Illinois—The American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS) proudly acknowledges the outstanding contributions of its Immediate Past President, Pushkar Mehra, DMD, MS, FACS, and extends a warm welcome to David B. Powers, DMD, MD, FACS, FRCS (Ed), who will serve as President for 2024-2025. Additionally, ABOMS is delighted to announce the appointment of Paul Ciuci, DMD, MD, FACS as the Board’s new Director. As these key leadership positions change hands, ABOMS recognizes the significant advancements under Dr. Mehra and looks forward to continued excellence with Dr. Powers at the helm.

With the support of Dr. Mehra’s visionary leadership, ABOMS made discernible, positive progress across several priority areas. The ABOMS of today is modern, relevant, and focused on diversifying its mission and offerings. The Board remains steady and strong in certifying new Diplomates each year. The 2024 Oral Certifying Examination was the third largest in ABOMS history and welcomed 348 Diplomates who met the gold standard of excellence.

Remaining relevant and promoting best-in-practice techniques are core values of the organization.“We are actively working on integrating “simulation” into the oral certifying exam – mannequins, clinical scenarios, skills-based testing, and OSCE’s are some examples of the exciting projects on the table for consideration. Some of these initiatives will make us pioneers in the Board certification process among our peers,” Dr. Mehra comments.

In addition to these advancements, Dr. Mehra created the footprint to improve its support for oral and maxillofacial surgeons from their early stages of residency. To this end, the Board plans to strengthen its relationships with residency programs by developing a Residency Program Liaison initiative, while also collaborating with allied organizations to further enhance resources that promote education during residency.

Moreover, the Board has continued to spotlight its Diplomates by sharing patient stories and showcasing those who hold Certificates of Added Qualifications (CAQs) with ABOMS. This initiative both recognizes the exceptional work of Diplomates and also allows the public to learn about the high standards upheld by ABOMS-certified surgeons.

Lastly, Dr. Mehra’s tenure as President was instrumental as ABOMS reinforced its existing partnerships and sought new collaborations within the hybrid specialties of dental and medical healthcare. The Board’s relationship with the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) remains exceptionally strong, and both organizations work together to ensure that oral and maxillofacial surgery continues to advance and adapt in a rapidly evolving healthcare landscape. ABOMS extends its deepest gratitude to Dr. Mehra for his exceptional service and leadership and is confident Dr. David Powers will be an equally dedicated President.

“ABOMS is even stronger thanks to Dr. Mehra’s profound knowledge and expertise in the OMS specialty as well as his unwavering dedication to supporting current Diplomates and the next generation of ABOMS surgeons,” says Dr. David Powers. “I am honored to step into the role of President and continue the legacy of excellence that Dr. Mehra, and those before him, have established. I am equally excited to welcome Dr. Paul Ciuci to the Board of Directors. Dr. Ciuci’s extensive experience, passion for education, and dedication to our community make him well-suited to excel as our Director, and I am confident that his involvement will make a positive, lasting impact on the organization.”

New Director, Dr. Paul Ciuci, is honored to play a significant role in the future of the Board and notes, “I’m truly looking forward to continuing to be a part of the ABOMS family. I feel fortunate to be surrounded by such talented, smart, and dedicated people. It’s the people who make the ABOMS experience one of a kind.”
