In its most severe forms, infants may experience up to 80 percent skin loss, with many not surviving past early childhood.
With EB classified as an orphan disease, affecting fewer than 200,000 people nationwide, funding for treatment and research remains limited, the charity says. Many large charities and public health organizations do not cover the condition, leaving families with few options for support while facing ongoing medical costs tied to pain medicine, bandages, wound healing, nutrition, blood transfusions, hospitalizations, antibiotics, and IVs.
