Young readers and their families have a new reason to celebrate! The Bird Caper, the award-winning first installment in The Crow’s Tales series by Victoria E. Pannell and Thorir Sigfusson, has just earned GOLD in the prestigious Wishing Shelf Book Awards—an honor made even more meaningful as the books are judged by actual middle-grade readers, the series’ target audience. The audiobook version was also named a finalist, continuing the momentum for this heartfelt and humorous adventure series.
The milestone comes just ahead of The Bird Caper’s first book birthday this June and follows a string of notable recognitions, including a Literary Titan Gold Book Award and the indie B.R.A.G. Medallion. The book explores the universal theme of change, as ten-year-old Brandon Woodberry grapples with a move away from the only home—and friends—he's ever known, including his mischievous pet crow, Ralph. The story masterfully weaves relatable emotions with surprising adventures, a touch of mystery, and important lessons about friendship and resilience.
Co-author Victoria E. Pannell shares, “It’s been a year of wonderful surprises. The response from both young readers and educators has been incredible. Knowing that kids themselves are awarding our work makes this especially rewarding.”
Following closely on its success, the newly released The Big Dream—Book Two in the Crow’s Tales trilogy—has already captured readers’ hearts, receiving its own Literary Titan Gold Book Award and becoming a Finalist in the Readers' Choice Book Award. With its central theme of honesty, the second installment follows Brandon and his friends through a summer filled with big plans, bird investigations, and a high-stakes remote-control car race. Bursting with humor, heart, and hijinks, The Big Dream has been praised for its authentic voice, warm storytelling, and the unforgettable antics of Brandon’s feathered sidekick, Ralph.
The authors are currently engaging with readers across the country by attending book festivals, visiting schools to inspire young writers, appearing on podcasts, and supporting independent bookstores, including Delaware favorites Browseabout Books and Huxley and Hiro.
