On July 25, 2024, at the advisor appointment ceremony and the first academic symposium on Three-River-Source Studies held in Yushu, Qinghai, Professor Lian Yuming, a member of both the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and its Committee on Proposals, the Chief Expert of the Three-River-Source National Park Administration, and the Director of the Three-River-Source Academy, proposed the concept of “Three-River-Source Studies” for the first time. This is the latest research achievement made by the Three-River-Source Academy since its establishment. It is also an important outcome of the “Protecting the Mother River, Guarding the Three-River-Source” research on Yushu’s high-quality development by experts in the capital and the “service for the people” efforts made by members of the CPPCC National Committee.

Professor Lian Yuming told reporters that the Three-River-Source is an important symbol of the international ecological civilization highland of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. It is the origin of China’s myriad mountains, rivers, life forms, national parks and cultures. It is a “national priority” in China’s ecological civilization construction, holding an irreplaceable strategic position in the development of Chinese and human civilization. The Three-River-Source has not only national significance but also global influence, becoming an international window showcasing China’s image and promoting mutual learning among civilizations. The establishment of “Three-River-Source Studies” provides a new academic perspective for a deeper understanding and comprehensive grasp of the laws of ecological civilization construction on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. It builds an international discourse and communication system to tell the story about China’s ecological civilization to the world and offers theoretical support for strengthening the construction of a nature reserve system centering around national parks, with a view of building a model nature reserve with national representation and global influence.

Three-River-Source Studies proposes that the key strategic perspectives for observing the international ecological civilization highland of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau include the theories of the Roof of the World, Source Civilization, Ecosystem, Watershed Coordination, and National Parks. These perspectives form the core viewpoints and logical framework of Three-River-Source Studies. This field integrates geology, climatology, ecology, anthropology, cultural studies, sociology, historical watershed studies, and management science, centering on the “Five Theories” to build an ecological civilization theoretical system of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau with the Three-River-Source as the research subject. Three-River-Source Studies suggests that the Three-River-Source National Park should leverage institutional advantages, highlight cultural characteristics, and promote all-people’s participation to maximally protect the authenticity and integrity of the park’s ecosystem. It advocates exploring new models of protection and development that mutually reinforce each other through the joint construction, governance, and sharing of national parks. This approach aims to create a new paradigm of nature reserves centering around national parks by pursuing high-level protection and high-quality development, fostering the positive interaction between natural landscapes and environmental education, and integrating the excellent traditional Chinese culture with ethnic cultures. Ultimately, it seeks to depict a magnificent picture of Chinese-style modernization where humans and nature coexist harmoniously, showcasing the greatest ecological value, responsibility, and potential.

At this academic symposium, experts and scholars delivered keynote speeches and participated in roundtable forums centering on “Theoretical Exploration of Creating a Model Nature Reserve with National Representation and Global Influence.” Additionally, the “Three-River-Source Yak” sculpture was unveiled, and appointment certificates were awarded to 54 advisors and researchers of the Three-River-Source Academy. The Three-River-Source Academy signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement with New Oriental Smart Education. On the morning of the July 26, China Crane Research Base of the Three-River-Source Academy was officially inaugurated at the Longbao National Nature Reserve in Yushu.
