Cloud-native athenaOne architecture enables rapid deployment of AI features to realize the promise of data exchange, provide easy access to insights for practices of all sizes
athenahealth, a leading provider of network-enabled software and services for health care practices and systems nationwide, today announced major advancements that will usher in the next generation of intelligent interoperability for ambulatory care practices across the country. These advancements are part of the company’s vision of a reimagined AI-native athenaOne platform, which will be rolling out over the coming months to revolutionize how practices engage patients, coordinate and deliver care, and manage their revenue cycle.
“At athenahealth, we’ve spent decades helping clinicians navigate the increasing complexities they face every day in their practices,” said Bob Segert, chairman and chief executive officer at athenahealth. “Rapid advances in AI are now allowing us to reimagine the clinician and practice experience, solve previously unsolvable problems, and bring back the human side of healthcare. We will be rolling out a transformative new experience across our athenaOne platform that relieves today’s administrative burdens while future proofing ambulatory practices for the challenges of tomorrow.”
With the introduction of athenahealth’s intelligent interoperability approach the company is moving the industry beyond compliance and the simple exchange of data, to provide practices with a seamless experience that makes the most relevant clinical insights visible and actionable at the moment of care. These capabilities are bringing healthcare another step closer to intelligent interoperability.
“athenahealth is uniquely positioned to equip practices of all sizes with the technology, solutions, and insights to deliver personalized care with a whole-person view of the patient,” said Paul Brient, chief product officer at athenahealth. “We are building the future, using intelligent interoperability to methodically break down the walled gardens that have constrained independent practices for more than a decade. By layering custom-built, AI-enabled solutions onto our industry-leading approach to interoperability, we’re making the promise of interoperability a reality.”
Interoperability is a core strength of the athenahealth platform. Open architecture, real-time data exchange, and longitudinal patient records are already helping power better experiences for clinicians and better outcomes for patients. In July, athenahealth became the first company to implement TEFCA across all of our eligible customers, cementing its position as a nationwide leader in interoperability. The company committed to becoming a CMS-aligned network and was recently recognized by the White House for its leadership in interoperability.
Now, athenahealth is powering the next generation of interoperability aimed at both ingesting and contextualizing data to support clinical decision making. athenaOne is moving the healthcare ecosystem towards true intelligent interoperability, embedding generative AI across the platform. The company is piloting an industry-first Model Context Protocol (MCP) server on athenaOne platform APIs, designed to facilitate and standardized communication between AI models and athenaOne. This is the critical first step in the dynamic and real-time interaction of disparate data sources across practices, hospitals, public health registries, payers, data aggregators, and other EHR systems in a way that enables relevant insights to be identified, extracted, and placed directly in the clinical workflow at the moment of need.
athenahealth is also announcing enhancements of AI-native capabilities already available to all customers via the athenaOne platform as well as new capabilities that are coming soon. These AI-native capabilities include:
- Next generation Document Services – already in use in the athenaOne platform, Document Services uses machine learning to read over a billion pages of faxes received by practices, and automatically and accurately place them directly in the patient chart. athenahealth's next generation Document Services is now using AI to appropriately label clinical, imaging, and administrative documents as they are saved to the chart. Further, document services is being enhanced to allow valuable clinical information to be extracted from faxes, saved in the chart as discrete data elements, then searched, trended, and reported against for quality programs, enabling practices on the athenahealth network to continue achieving industry-leading value-based care results.
- Next generation ChartSync – already in use in the athenaOne platform, ChartSync uses AI to support clinicians by digesting and reconciling important information shared through national networks, putting data directly in provider workflows. Today, ChartSync automatically processes 94% of incoming medication information from external sources, including other ambulatory care practices, pharmacies, and hospitals. ChartSync deduplicates medication notifications and adds this information to a patient’s chart with no manual action required by the practices. By leveraging AI to identify and reconcile these errors, providers spend less time checking duplicative lists and more time focused on patient care.
- Intelligent Summaries – soon to enter alpha testing, Intelligent Summaries provides AI-powered overviews of diverse clinical data, including information from clinical documents, discrete data points, and a patient’s medical and social history. By generating summaries across documents, charts, and clinical events, this enhancement enables clinicians to quickly access relevant insights and make informed decisions.
- Chart Assist – currently in alpha testing, Chart Assist leverages generative AI to provide physicians with an AI-enabled assistant that can search across all available clinical data to answer questions or generate summaries across documents, charts, and clinical events to surface key elements of patient history needed to prepare for visits.
By combining one of the most comprehensive patient data sets in healthcare with a powerful, AI-native intelligence layer, athenahealth is delivering patient-centric insights that enhance clinical decision-making and streamline care coordination, setting a new standard for what clinicians should expect from their healthcare technology partners.
athenahealth is committed to transforming the clinical experience, reshaping the EHR into an intelligent, thoughtful partner that reduces clinicians’ cognitive load and removes administrative burden from practice staff. The company will be unveiling additional capabilities and experiences as part of its new AI-native athenaOne experience, centering around the clinical workflow, revenue cycle, and patient engagement.
