Michael Kilberry, Chief Product & Technology Officer, Red Cell Partners
"Michael brings to Red Cell a powerful trifecta of grit, hustle, and deep technical expertise, which makes him the ideal leader to drive product development and technology across Red Cell and our incubations,” said Red Cell’s Founder, Chairman, and CEO Grant Verstandig. “Michael has played a key part in shaping some of the foundational technologies we rely on today. For example, while at Microsoft, he was one of the original architects behind cloud-based Business Productivity Online Services, maturing that offering into what is now widely known as Office 365, and was a founding architect in Microsoft’s Office of the CTO. At Amazon, he created several new services from scratch, including Amazon Location Service and Amazon Geospatial ML.
“Michael clearly could have taken his talents anywhere. But he chose to come to Red Cell because he believes in our mission to develop powerful tools and technologies aimed at addressing some of our Nation’s most pressing challenges,” Verstandig added. “With Michael on board, our customers and partners have access to a world-class product leader as they work to bring AI into healthcare and national security. I’m beyond thrilled to welcome him to the team.”
In his new role as Chief Product and Technology Officer, Kilberry will be responsible for shaping and executing the product and technology vision across the Red Cell ecosystem. He will identify market opportunities, define product and technical strategies, and work closely with teams across Red Cell’s incubations to guide the development and delivery of innovative, mission-driven technologies, positioning them to scale and become self-sufficient.
A proud native of Chicago, Kilberry comes to Red Cell from Google Cloud, where he served as Head of Product for AI/ML, Data & Analytics. In this role, he led the vision, strategy, and product execution for incorporating Gemini and other core AI/ML investments into the Google Cloud Platform (GCP) Data & Analytics portfolio. There, he leveraged his extensive experience and expertise in AI/ML, cloud computing, and industry-specific solutions to create and deliver cutting-edge products that enable customers to harness the power of data and analytics at scale. Before joining Google, Kilberry founded and led an applied AI stealth startup focused on the legal industry, before a successful exit.
Prior to his stint as a founder, Kilberry was Head of Product at Amazon Web Services (AWS), leading product, engineering, applied science, and go-to-market strategy for services like SageMaker, Human-in-the-Loop AI, and Geospatial ML/AI. While at AWS, Kilberry was the go-to innovator for all things AI/ML and geospatial at Amazon, building out a new product division as well as leading research in the Geospatial ML space. Kilberry has also held senior product and engineering leadership roles at Microsoft and Snowflake, where he co-founded, architected, and oversaw several strategic, complex, and innovative products, projects, and partnerships across various sectors, including retail and manufacturing.
Kilberry prides himself on being a servant leader with a passion for mentoring teams and other founders. He currently serves as an advisor at TQ Ventures, an early-stage venture capital firm, and sits on the board of Koodos Labs, a products and research company behind the social media app, Shelf.
"We’re living in a time when the pace of change is faster than ever. Innovations from just weeks ago can swiftly be made obsolete by the next breakthrough. Now, more than ever, moats depend on an organization’s ability to adapt to that rate of change. Today, strong, nimble startups are well-positioned to respond to this moment, and that is why I am so excited to be joining Red Cell—to help our incubations do that at scale,” said Kilberry. “I’ve always been entrepreneurial and curious, someone unafraid of pushing the red button that says, ‘don’t push.’ At Red Cell, I get to channel that energy into helping to build multiple startups simultaneously, drawing on all the experience (and scar tissue) I’ve accumulated over the years, to help other founders build their vision for the future.
“What I’m especially excited about is working with the Red Cell team. Everyone here is aligned on the mission and has the capability to execute at the pace this moment demands,” Kilberry said. “It already feels like home."
