New Mexico hospital chooses CMS’s newest care designation, transitions to affordable system designed to meet the specific needs of REH hospitals
Medsphere Systems Corporation, the leading provider of affordable healthcare IT platform solutions for safety-net provider organizations, today announced that Guadalupe County Hospital has made the transition to the company’s Wellsoft electronic health record (EHR) and RCM Cloud platform.
The move to Wellsoft was in response to Guadalupe’s adoption of the Rural Emergency Hospital (REH) designation, which Congress approved in 2021 to enable alternative funding approaches and more financial support for rural healthcare. Guadalupe County has been a Medsphere partner since 2011 and previously used the company’s CareVue healthcare IT solution. Guadalupe County adopted RCM Cloud in 2019, which they will continue to use alongside Wellsoft.
“The finalized implementation of Wellsoft officially launches an exciting new chapter in the history of Guadalupe County Hospital,” said Hospital Administrator Frank Tenorio. “We’re confident that, as an REH, Guadalupe will be on more firm financial footing moving forward and that Wellsoft will affordably meet all our clinical needs under the new designation. America can scarcely afford to lose more rural hospitals, and we’re optimistic that REH hospitals will remain viable into the foreseeable future.”
To that end as it relates specifically to Guadalupe County Hospital, Tenorio credits IT Director Emilio Campos for managing the transition project and seeing it across the finish line. “Emilio deserves most if not all of the credit for completing the transition to Wellsoft,” Tenorio said. “He was indispensable in this project, and we are very fortunate to have him on the team.”
Hospitals that are eligible for REH status must, as of December 27, 2020, have fewer than 50 beds and be in a rural area or have an active rural classification. As of February, a total of 36 hospitals nationwide had transitioned to the REH classification, with most concentrated in the southeastern U.S. from Texas to Georgia and into Kentucky and Kansas.
“Wellsoft is excited to support Guadalupe County Hospital through this transition and we congratulate hospital leadership for making the bold decision to be among the first to adopt REH status,” said Steve Feher, VP, Implementation and Services for Medsphere. “We also appreciate the trust Guadalupe County has shown in us by choosing to stay within the same organization for their healthcare IT needs. With a pedigree firmly rooted in emergency services, Wellsoft is ideal for organizations that adopt the REH designation and we look forward to continuing our relationship.”
Originally an award-winning, best-in-class emergency department health IT platform, the expanded version of Wellsoft includes key functionality that makes it optimal for REH facilities and small, rural, safety-net acute care organizations like Guadalupe County. Wellsoft is also implemented in several inpatient behavioral health facilities across the country.
About Guadalupe County Hospital
Located about 120 miles due east of Albuquerque, Guadalupe County Hospital is an essential healthcare organization and anchor for the surrounding community. In the city of Santa Rosa, Guadalupe County is a major community employer, the primary source of health information for residents, and an irreplaceable training site for caregivers working in areas of the county where homes are miles apart and accidents leave little time for a trip into town. In small towns like Santa Rosa, caregivers interact daily with friends and family, creating an intimacy and personalization that increases the emotional demands on hospital staff. The long-term goal of Guadalupe County staff and providers is to serve as foundational component of a healthy, educated, and economically thriving population.
