New Patents Protect Company’s Industry Lead in Recognizing and Semantically Grouping and Categorizing Data Records, and Contextualizing Anomalous Behavior Towards Data
Concentric AI announced today that it has secured its fifth and sixth patents of the year, emphasizing the company’s ongoing innovation and leadership in advancing AI-driven data security. These most recent patents reinforce the company’s industry leadership in recognizing, semantically grouping, and categorizing data records, as well as contextualizing anomalous behavior specifically related to data. These unique capabilities set Concentric AI apart from all other data security tools on the market.
The first of the two newly granted patents, “Method and Electronic Device to Assign Appropriate Semantic Categories to Documents with Arbitrary Granularity,” recognizes the company’s approach to harnessing Large Language Models (LLMs) for semantic categorization. This method assigns semantic categories and subcategories to content with unmatched accuracy at enterprise scale. While LLMs are very data-intensive, highly optimized data compression techniques called adaptive manifold compression models achieve up to 10 times more compression and significantly improve data discovery rates, leading to better compute efficiency, storage, and performance.
A major benefit of the technology described in the new patent is that there’s no requirement to specify the entire taxonomy of categories upfront; the design allows for dynamically adding or removing categories seamlessly, and categories can differ in levels of detail. For example, they could be as specific as certain types of tax forms or as broad as all legal agreements. This feature is foundational to Concentric AI’s product and enables companies to categorize data across repositories into meaningful semantic groups without any upfront effort, such as configuring regexes and patterns.
The second patent, “Methods and Systems for Determining Anomalous User Access to Data Objects,” underscores the company’s novel approach to legacy user behavior analytics (UBA). Traditional UBA and UEBA (user and entity behavior analytics) tools aim to detect insider threats by profiling user activity and spotting anomalies but often generate false positives because many “anomalies" are benign behaviors with valid business reasons. These conventional methods fall short because they lack the context of the data associated with user behavior. With this new patent, Concentric AI integrates data context with user behavior, enabling the accurate identification and pinpointing of risky behaviors related to sensitive data with unmatched precision.
“This pair of patent awards validates that Concentric AI’s ability to assign semantic categories and subcategories to content and better recognize true anomalies in behavior as it relates to data are game changers,” said Karthik Krishnan, Concentric AI Founder and CEO. “Despite data security existing in some form for decades, it has gained a reputation for being flawed because it misses a lot of sensitive data and causes security teams to waste time chasing false positives. Concentric AI provides the context that is missing in legacy tools, which is so badly needed to autonomously protect sensitive data with high accuracy.”
These two new patent awards follow four patents awarded earlier this year, demonstrating that Concentric AI is at the forefront of data security innovation while addressing real-world data security issues. The new patents emphasize how Concentric AI uniquely provides superior visibility into data, reduces risks related to mishandling sensitive information, and boosts productivity through automated discovery and remediation. This functionality has been available, and these patents protect novel intellectual property for the Semantic Intelligence engine that understands the context of data content for unmatched detail and accuracy in identifying the nature of data and utilizing semantic categories to assess anomalous and potentially risky user activity. Understanding the semantic context of a data record, such as a contract in the legal industry, a tax form in financial services, or a workers’ compensation claim in insurance, is a key strength of Concentric AI. These patents expand its IP portfolio, building on that foundation.
In large-scale environments, there is a constantly growing volume of documents being generated. Even mid-sized businesses can easily accumulate tens or hundreds of millions of records. This creates a significant challenge for security teams responsible for ensuring sensitive information is adequately protected while remaining accessible to authorized personnel, because manually identifying the exact permissions for each user is neither practical nor feasible.
Unlike other data security tools, Concentric AI’s Semantic Intelligence data security governance solution scans organizations’ data records in their entirety. Its proprietary AI technology understands context to identify not only PII, PCI, and PHI data but also more challenging types of sensitive data, including intellectual property and critical business documents. After discovery, it can determine the most suitable classification category and automatically tag the data. Additionally, Semantic Intelligence monitors and autonomously identifies risks to sensitive data caused by improper permissions, incorrect entitlements, and risky sharing. It can automatically fix permissions and sharing problems or use other security solutions and cloud APIs to swiftly and continuously safeguard at-risk data.
