International Data Corporation (IDC) today published an IDC Innovators report profiling three companies offering legal research tools that leverage artificial intelligence (AI), proprietary tags, and user-friendly interfaces to make legal research more affordable and accessible. The three companies are: Casetext, eDiscovery Assistant, and Fastcase.
Legal research tools are digital versions of the case lawbooks that fill every law library and are updated with the latest statutes, regulations, and caselaw. Historically, the cost to conveniently access legal research has been exorbitantly expensive. However, several smaller companies are adding advanced search functions, summaries of the law, and other proprietary add-ons, such as AI and analytic capabilities, to create legal research tools that enhance lawyers' ability to analyze and interpret the law.
"Law firms have subsidized their cost to access research by billing their access to their corporate clients with larger pockets. This has put solo practitioners and small firms at a disadvantage. However, smaller players are emerging to democratize and disrupt the cost and way that attorneys access legal research. These innovators are leveraging technology to make legal research more affordable and accessible for your legal department," said Ryan O'Leary, research manager, Privacy and Legal Technology at IDC.
The report, IDC Innovators: Legal Research Software, 2022 (IDC #US49114621), profiles three companies offering legal research tools that leverage artificial intelligence (AI), proprietary tags, and user-friendly interfaces. The three companies are:
Casetext offers analytics and AI enhanced legal research that enables practitioners to quickly access caselaw summaries, relevant holdings, and the appropriate cites based on their fact patterns.
eDiscovery Assistant uses proprietary issue tags tailored to eDiscovery issues to cut through the noise and bring practitioners the caselaw they need to make informed decisions about their eDiscovery strategies.
Fastcase uses a unique subscription model to offer practitioners an affordable and fully searchable library of over 200 million briefs, pleadings, and motions on top of a library of caselaw, regulations, and statutes.
