athenahealth Customers Outperformed Healthcare Industry in 2020 MIPS Quality Payment Program

More than 96% of athenaOne® clinicians received positive payment adjustments

athenahealth, Inc., a leading provider of network-enabled software and services for medical groups and health systems nationwide, today announced that clinicians using athenaOne outperformed the healthcare industry in the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) on positive payment adjustments in 2020, based on preliminary results from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

Through the MIPS program, clinicians receive a score based on their performance in categories designed to reduce healthcare costs and increase quality of care. This score is used to determine if the clinicians receive a negative, neutral, or positive Medicare payment adjustment. CMS, which calculates MIPS scores for athenahealth clinicians using athenahealth data, recently released data on national performance for all 2020 participating clinicians. The goal of MIPS is to “tie payments to quality and cost-efficient care, drive improvement in care processes and health outcomes, increase the use of healthcare information, and reduce the cost of care,” according to CMS.

For 2020, 96.3% of eligible clinicians using athenaOne to report on three MIPS categories – Quality, Promoting Interoperability, and Improvement Activities – received positive MIPS payment adjustments, which compares to 91% of participating clinicians nationally. In addition, in 2020 athenahealth delivered nearly 97,000 submissions on behalf of athenaOne customers and protected 99.8% of customer revenue by ensuring they avoided any penalties.

The strong performance highlights the focus on quality management services and workflows embedded in athenaOne, athenahealth’s cloud-based suite of healthcare products. Through its MIPS expertise, program research and guidance, measurement and performance management tools, and submission and audit support, athenaOne provides a comprehensive solution for healthcare providers to successfully work with the program.

“We are proud to help our customers achieve success through the MIPS program,” said Paul Brient, chief product officer at athenahealth. “By helping clinicians navigate the complex MIPS requirements, manage the lengthy reporting process, and maximize revenue opportunities, athenahealth provides a true partnership with our customers, allowing them to focus on what’s most important – delivering quality care to their patients.”
