UNIONDALE, NY / ACCESS Newswire / February 12, 2025 / With over two decades of professional experience, Melanie Delehanty Smith leverages her expertise in civil engineering to excel in complicated legal projects. Ms. Smith possesses significant design knowledge in the realm of all things civil engineering but prides herself on the creative stormwater solutions which have become increasingly crucial in today's world. She brings with her the learned insight of navigating many complicated designs with and without public-private partnerships, as well as understanding the needs of all the stakeholders, especially the community the project will serve.

Ms. Smith approaches all projects with the client's needs and desires, while also understanding the complex steps necessary for a successful project to become realized. She is well-versed in collaborating with land development attorneys, real estate agents and investment advisors, as well as local, state and national government agencies, on many different legal and land development designs and/or agreements, from small half-acre parcels to large multi-year, multi-phase community development projects.
Currently, Ms. Smith is the owner of Mel-Haven Engineering LLC in Sarasota, Florida, which she established in 2021. As a distinguished civil engineer, her role at Mel-Haven Engineering LLC includes design and oversight of every project, from small venture projects for single clients, to large multi-phase developments with many stakeholders, to managing intricate development agreements, collaborating with land development attorneys and overseeing public-private partnerships. Ms. Smith is also responsible for designing, signing and sealing plans, ensuring meticulous project oversight at every stage.
Building a Professional Career
Ms. Smith's academic background, which includes obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, cum laude, from the University of Florida in 2007, has aided her professional career. She obtained her Professional Engineering License in Florida, upon completion of the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam in December 2012. She has maintained an active Florida PE license since. She has furthered her knowledge and skills by being actively involved in many engineering-related societies and nonprofit endeavors, such as American Society of Engineers, the ACE Mentor Program of America, as well as mentoring many young engineers over the years. These educational achievements have provided Ms. Smith with the technical knowledge and tools to excel in her profession.
Before founding Mel-Haven Engineering LLC, Ms. Smith held various roles at Stantec Consulting Services Inc., where she amassed over a decade of experience. Hired in 2007, she served as an engineer intern, project engineer, project manager, senior associate, office manager and lead mentor which helped her hone her leadership skills in managing complex, high-profile engineering projects, especially during the construction of new health care facilities at Sarasota Memorial Hospital (SMH) and downtown development initiatives, such as the QUAY Sarasota and the roundabout at Fruitville Rd and US 41.
Other notable projects to Ms. Smith's credit include the SMH-Venice Campus, which required complex coordination with multiple regulatory bodies to design, permit and build a cutting-edge medical facility and master plan for future growth. In addition to abiding by local design requirements, the helipad required coordination and design compliance with Federal Aviation Administration regulations, as well as coordinating with a robust AIA design team which included rigorous design mockups and complex design requirements per AHCA hospitals and medical clinic design.
Throughout her career, Ms. Smith has adapted to the industry's continual changes, from utilizing the most current or cutting-edge software (ICPR v4/Stormwise and GIS) and now venturing into the exploration of how AI can support the design, permitting, and coordination process more efficiently.
Outside of her professional life, Ms. Smith is actively involved in civic-minded organizations, including the ACE Mentor Program in Sarasota, FC Sarasota Soccer and the Lakeview Elementary PTO. She is dedicated to giving back to the community and mentoring young individuals pursuing careers in architecture, construction and engineering.
Unwavering Support Leads to Success
Ms. Smith credits her professional success to the unwavering support from her community, devoted family and husband, as well as supportive mentors. She believes these relationships have been foundational to her achievements, as has her motivation and drive to succeed.
Focused on vision and strategic planning to serve a larger client base and undertake a variety of projects, Ms. Smith's primary focus is making a significant impact by supporting smaller entities like nonprofits, churches and community schools. She is determined to provide support to those who may struggle to receive it from larger corporations. She advises those interested in the industry to move with honesty while keeping the client's interests as their top priority.
